The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) has received more than GH¢6 million through monthly salary deductions from government appointees, including President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
The contributions form part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting the Medical Trust Fund, which was established to provide financial assistance to Ghanaians suffering from chronic and life-threatening illnesses that often require expensive medical treatment.
According to officials, the fund has seen steady support from political appointees who voluntarily contribute a portion of their salaries to help sustain the programme and expand access to healthcare for vulnerable citizens.
The MahamaCares initiative was introduced as a social intervention designed to complement existing healthcare schemes by offering support for conditions that may not be fully covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Beneficiaries are expected to include patients battling illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease, cardiovascular conditions, and other serious medical complications.
Government sources indicate that the over GH¢6 million accumulated so far demonstrates a growing commitment among public officials to contribute directly toward improving healthcare outcomes across the country.
Health sector stakeholders have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step toward mobilizing additional resources for critical healthcare services. They note that access to specialized treatment remains a challenge for many families, particularly those faced with high medical expenses.
The initiative has also sparked discussions on sustainable healthcare financing, with advocates urging broader public and private sector participation to strengthen the fund and ensure long-term support for patients in need.
Officials say the contributions will help enhance the fund’s capacity to provide timely medical assistance and reduce the financial burden on affected families.
As the programme continues to grow, government remains optimistic that the Medical Trust Fund will play a significant role in improving healthcare accessibility and supporting thousands of Ghanaians facing serious health challenges.
