The Volta Regional Police Command has destroyed several acres of suspected cannabis (Indian hemp) farms during an intelligence-led operation at Peki Dzake as part of efforts to combat the illegal cultivation and trafficking of narcotic substances.
The operation, conducted by officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), targeted farms believed to be used for the unauthorized cultivation of cannabis. The suspected plants were destroyed at the site, while investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
Speaking after the exercise, the Director of the DLEU, DSP Richard Dotse Gablah, cautioned individuals engaged in the illegal cultivation of cannabis to comply with Ghana’s laws by obtaining the necessary licenses before venturing into industrial hemp production.
He explained that although Ghana has legalized the cultivation of industrial hemp under the Narcotics Control Commission Act, cultivation is only permitted under strict regulatory conditions and with approval from the appropriate authorities.
DSP Gablah emphasized that unauthorized cultivation of cannabis remains a criminal offence and warned that law enforcement agencies would continue to intensify operations to clamp down on illegal farms across the country.
He urged farmers interested in cultivating industrial hemp for medicinal, pharmaceutical or industrial purposes to follow the legal application process through the relevant regulatory institutions.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating drug-related crimes and called on residents to provide information that could assist security agencies in identifying illegal cannabis farms and other narcotics-related activities.
Authorities believe continued collaboration between communities and law enforcement agencies will play a crucial role in curbing the illegal drug trade and protecting public safety.
The operation forms part of broader national efforts to enforce Ghana’s narcotics laws while promoting lawful investment in the country’s emerging industrial hemp sector.
