AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has commissioned a modern Piggery Production Centre at Sanso in the Obuasi Municipality as part of efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods and reduce communities’ dependence on mining activities.
The initiative forms part of the company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which seeks to create alternative sources of income, strengthen local agribusiness, and improve the socio-economic well-being of residents in Obuasi and surrounding communities.
The newly commissioned facility is expected to enhance pig production, improve food security, create employment opportunities, and support the development of a vibrant livestock industry within the municipality and the Obuasi East District.
Creating Opportunities Beyond Mining
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, officials of AngloGold Ashanti emphasized the importance of economic diversification in mining communities, noting that sustainable development requires investments that extend beyond mineral extraction.
The company said the project demonstrates its commitment to creating lasting value for host communities by supporting initiatives that can generate income and improve living standards long after mining operations have ceased.
According to AGA, the piggery centre will provide training opportunities for farmers and youth, equip beneficiaries with modern livestock management skills, and encourage entrepreneurship within the agricultural sector.
Transforming Local Agriculture
The project is expected to serve as a model for community-based agribusiness development by promoting modern animal husbandry practices and improving access to quality livestock production techniques.
Agricultural experts attending the event noted that Ghana’s livestock sector has significant growth potential and that investments such as the piggery centre can contribute to reducing the country’s dependence on imported meat products.
They added that the initiative could stimulate related businesses, including feed production, veterinary services, meat processing, transportation, and local markets.
Community Leaders Welcome Initiative
Traditional authorities, government representatives, development partners, and community members who attended the commissioning praised AngloGold Ashanti for investing in projects that directly impact local livelihoods.
Community leaders described the piggery centre as a transformative intervention that would help empower residents, especially young people, by providing practical skills and creating pathways to self-employment.
Beneficiaries of the project expressed optimism that the facility would help improve household incomes and strengthen economic resilience in the area.
Supporting Long-Term Development
The piggery centre is among several initiatives being implemented under AngloGold Ashanti’s broader community development strategy aimed at promoting education, healthcare, agriculture, skills training, and economic empowerment.
Officials indicated that the company remains committed to working closely with stakeholders to ensure that development projects address the real needs of communities and contribute to sustainable growth.
As operations begin at the facility, stakeholders are hopeful that the project will not only boost local pig production but also become a catalyst for broader agricultural and economic development across the Obuasi enclave.
