Transport Operators Threaten 20% Fare Hike Over Deteriorating Kasoa–Winneba Highway

Transport operators using the Kasoa–Winneba highway have threatened to increase transport fares by 20 percent if urgent measures are not taken to improve the condition of the road.

According to drivers and transport unions, the deteriorating state of the busy highway has significantly increased vehicle maintenance costs, fuel consumption, and travel times, placing enormous financial pressure on commercial transport operators.

The Kasoa–Winneba stretch serves as one of Ghana’s most important transport corridors, connecting Accra to several communities in the Central and Western regions. However, motorists say potholes, damaged sections, and increasing traffic congestion have made commuting increasingly difficult.

Transport operators argue that the poor road condition has resulted in frequent vehicle breakdowns, higher repair costs, and reduced daily trips, affecting their earnings and operational efficiency.

Several drivers warned that unless authorities intervene quickly to rehabilitate the road, they may have no choice but to adjust transport fares to offset rising operational expenses.

Passengers have expressed concern over the proposed increase, noting that many households are already struggling with the rising cost of living and would find higher transport fares difficult to absorb.

Commuters who rely on the route daily have also complained about extended travel times, discomfort, and safety concerns resulting from the deteriorating road network.

Transport unions are reportedly engaging relevant stakeholders and government agencies in discussions aimed at finding a long-term solution to the challenges affecting the highway.

Road users have meanwhile called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and other authorities to accelerate maintenance and rehabilitation works to prevent further deterioration.

The threat of a fare increase comes at a time when transportation costs remain a major concern for businesses, workers, and students across the country.

Stakeholders say improving the Kasoa–Winneba road could not only reduce transport costs but also enhance economic activity, improve road safety, and facilitate smoother movement of goods and services along one of Ghana’s busiest highways.
