Black Stars Suffer First Defeat of 2026 World Cup Despite Spirited Display Against Croatia

Ghana’s unbeaten run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end after the Black Stars suffered a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L fixture, ending what had been an impressive group-stage campaign.

Having entered the match on the back of a memorable victory over Panama and a disciplined draw against England, Ghana were hoping to finish the group stage without defeat. However, a determined Croatian side produced a late winner to claim all three points and secure second place in the group.

Croatia took the lead in the first half through Petar Sučić, whose powerful long-range strike beat goalkeeper Benjamin Asare and handed the Europeans the advantage. The Black Stars responded positively after the break, increasing the intensity and creating several promising chances. Their persistence paid off in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen equalised from a set-piece, reigniting Ghana’s hopes of claiming another famous result.

Just as the game appeared to be heading for a draw, Croatia struck the decisive blow in the 83rd minute. Veteran midfielder Luka Modrić delivered a perfectly weighted corner that was headed home by substitute Nikola Vlašić, restoring Croatia’s lead and ultimately sealing a 2-1 victory.

Although the defeat marked Ghana’s first loss of the tournament, it did not end the Black Stars’ World Cup journey. Thanks to earlier results in the group stage, Ghana accumulated enough points to qualify for the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, ending a 16-year wait to reach the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz praised his players for their commitment and resilience, insisting the defeat should not overshadow Ghana’s outstanding performances throughout the group stage. He urged the squad to quickly shift their focus to the knockout rounds, where every match becomes an opportunity to make history.

Supporters across Ghana applauded the team’s fighting spirit despite the setback. Many fans noted that the Black Stars once again demonstrated tactical discipline and determination against one of Europe’s strongest football nations.

With qualification secured, attention now turns to Ghana’s Round of 32 encounter, where the Black Stars will hope to build on their encouraging performances and continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
