Public health experts are warning Ghanaians against consuming meat singed with burning vehicle tyres, cautioning that the practice exposes consumers to dangerous chemicals that can cause serious long-term health complications.
Medical professionals explain that burning tyres release toxic substances, including heavy metals and cancer-causing compounds, which contaminate meat during the singeing process.
According to health experts, regular consumption of such contaminated meat may increase the risk of respiratory diseases, liver damage, kidney complications, reproductive disorders, and certain forms of cancer.
They are encouraging butchers and meat processors to adopt safer alternatives such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), clean firewood, or modern processing equipment approved by food safety authorities.
Consumers have also been advised to purchase meat only from certified slaughterhouses and vendors who follow approved food handling practices.
Health authorities say increased public education and stricter enforcement of food safety regulations will be critical in eliminating the unsafe practice.
