The Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) has strongly criticized comments made by Theresa Awuni, Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, following her recent public outburst involving CalBank.
In a statement, the Association described the MP’s conduct and remarks as unfortunate, stressing that public officials should exercise restraint and respect when addressing concerns involving financial institutions.
The GAB noted that while customers have the right to seek clarification or lodge complaints over banking services, disagreements should be handled through established complaint resolution mechanisms rather than public confrontations that could undermine confidence in the banking sector.
According to the Association, Ghana’s banking industry is built on professionalism, integrity and public trust, and actions capable of eroding that confidence should be avoided.
The Association further urged political leaders and public office holders to support efforts aimed at maintaining stability within the financial sector by engaging banks constructively whenever disputes arise.
Although the GAB did not disclose specific disciplinary measures, it emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual respect between financial institutions and their customers.
The incident has generated mixed reactions on social media, with some members of the public supporting the MP’s concerns, while others agreed with the Association that disputes involving banks should be resolved through the appropriate legal and regulatory channels.
CalBank has yet to issue a detailed public response regarding the incident, while observers expect the matter to be addressed through established banking and parliamentary processes.
The Ghana Association of Banks reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of the country’s financial system and ensuring that public confidence in the banking industry remains strong.
