Flooding Disrupts Activities at KNUST as Wiwi River Overflows After Heavy Rainfall

Parts of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been heavily flooded following a downpour that caused the Wiwi River to overflow its banks, disrupting movement across sections of the campus.

The worst-hit areas include the busy Mecca Road and Casely Hayford Avenue, where floodwaters submerged roads and surrounding areas early Thursday morning. Students, staff, and motorists were forced to navigate difficult conditions as the rising waters rendered portions of the campus inaccessible.

Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy rainfall quickly overwhelmed the river’s capacity, leading to widespread flooding along low-lying sections of the university. Videos and images circulating on social media showed significant water accumulation on roads, with some pedestrians stranded and vehicles struggling to pass through affected areas.

The flooding has disrupted academic and administrative activities, with many students experiencing delays in reaching lecture halls, hostels, and other facilities on campus. Authorities have urged members of the university community to exercise caution and avoid flooded routes until water levels recede.

Emergency and maintenance teams have reportedly been monitoring the situation, while concerns have been raised about the recurring flooding challenges along sections of the KNUST campus during periods of intense rainfall.

The incident comes as Ghana continues to experience seasonal rains that have triggered localized flooding in several communities across the country. Weather experts have repeatedly advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures during heavy storms.

As cleanup efforts begin, students and staff are calling for long-term drainage and flood-control solutions to prevent future disruptions and safeguard lives and property on one of Ghana’s largest university campuses.
