DR Congo’s Iconic “Living Statue” Superfan Denied U.S. Visa Ahead of England Clash

Atlanta, United States – Democratic Republic of Congo’s most famous football supporter, Michel Kuka Mboladinga, popularly known as “Lumumba Vea,” has been denied a U.S. visa, preventing him from attending his country’s highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against England.

Mboladinga became an international sensation during the Africa Cup of Nations after videos of him standing completely motionless throughout matches went viral on social media. Dressed in brightly coloured suits reflecting the DR Congo flag, he raises one arm in tribute to the country’s first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba, earning him the nickname “Lumumba Vea,” meaning “Lumumba Lives.”

The devoted supporter had travelled to Mexico to cheer on DR Congo during the group stage but was unable to enter the United States after his visa application was not approved. Reports indicate the setback was linked to visa processing and health-related travel restrictions associated with the Ebola outbreak in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, although U.S. authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact reason for the denial.

His absence comes at a historic moment for the Leopards, who reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history. The clash against England represents one of the biggest matches ever played by the Congolese national team on football’s biggest stage.

Despite being unable to attend, Mboladinga’s influence will still be felt inside the stadium. Congolese officials have arranged for another supporter, affectionately nicknamed “Lumumba Jr.,” to replicate his iconic pose during the match, ensuring the symbolic presence of one of African football’s most recognisable fans.

The story has drawn widespread sympathy from football supporters around the world, many of whom regard Mboladinga as one of the sport’s most passionate and unique fans. Social media has been flooded with messages of support, with many expressing hope that he will be able to join the team should DR Congo continue their remarkable World Cup journey.

While the visa setback has denied him the opportunity to witness the historic encounter in person, Congolese players and supporters say his unwavering dedication continues to inspire the team as they seek to make further history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
