Somali Referee Receives Hero’s Welcome After U.S. Denies World Cup Entry

Mogadishu, Somalia – Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has returned home to a hero’s welcome after being denied entry into the United States, a decision that ultimately prevented him from officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversy erupted after the Trump administration reportedly claimed that Artan posed a potential security risk and cited alleged links to individuals under terrorism-related investigation. According to reports, the referee was subjected to an extensive 11-hour interrogation by U.S. authorities, during which he was questioned about alleged connections to the extremist group Al-Shabaab.

Despite the allegations, no formal criminal charges have been announced against Artan, and U.S. officials have not publicly released detailed evidence supporting the decision to deny him entry.

The Somali official, who was selected to officiate at the World Cup after years of distinguished service, had been widely celebrated as a trailblazer for African football. His appointment was seen as a historic achievement, making him one of the few Somali referees ever chosen for football’s biggest tournament.

Upon his arrival in Mogadishu, large crowds gathered at the airport to welcome him home. Supporters waved Somali flags, chanted his name, and hailed him as a national hero, expressing disappointment over his exclusion from the tournament.

Many Somalis viewed the incident as a setback not only for Artan personally but also for African representation in international football. Social media platforms were flooded with messages of support, with many users praising his professionalism and contributions to the sport.

The case has sparked international debate over immigration policies, security screening procedures, and the impact such decisions can have on global sporting events. Critics argue that the incident raises questions about whether athletes, officials, and other participants can face barriers unrelated to their sporting qualifications.

FIFA has acknowledged the situation but reiterated that immigration and border control decisions fall under the jurisdiction of host nations. The governing body has not indicated whether any replacement arrangements will be made beyond appointing another official to take Artan’s place.

For many in Somalia, however, the focus has shifted from disappointment to pride. Although he will not participate in the World Cup, Omar Abdulkadir Artan’s reception at home demonstrated the admiration he continues to command among football fans across the country.
