Former Deputy Chief Executive of the National Youth Authority and New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Akosua Manu has criticized the government’s handling of the devastating June 29 floods, alleging that fiscal considerations were prioritized over the safety and welfare of Ghanaians.
Speaking after the disaster, she argued that inadequate investment in drainage infrastructure, flood prevention systems, and emergency preparedness contributed to the scale of destruction witnessed across several parts of Accra.
Akosua Manu called on government to significantly increase investment in flood mitigation projects, disaster response, and climate adaptation initiatives rather than delaying critical interventions due to budgetary constraints.
She further urged authorities to adopt long-term urban planning reforms capable of preventing future disasters instead of relying on emergency relief after flooding has already occurred.
Her comments come as flood victims continue to assess damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure while government agencies coordinate relief efforts for affected communities.
