Local Government Service Council Urged to Strengthen Accountability Across All 261 District Assemblies

The Local Government Service Council has been tasked with strengthening accountability, transparency, and service delivery across Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) as government intensifies efforts to improve local governance.

Officials say the directive forms part of broader public sector reforms aimed at ensuring district assemblies become more responsive to the developmental needs of their respective communities.

The Council has been encouraged to enforce strict performance monitoring systems for chief directors, coordinating directors, and other local government officials while ensuring public resources are managed efficiently and in accordance with the law.

Government believes stronger accountability mechanisms will improve project execution, reduce wasteful expenditure, and enhance public confidence in local administration.

The Council is also expected to promote professionalism within the Local Government Service by investing in staff training, performance evaluation, and digital governance systems to improve service delivery nationwide.

Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing effective local governance as essential for accelerating national development and ensuring government policies directly benefit citizens at the grassroots level.
