US-Based Ghanaian Calls for Waste-to-Wealth Solutions to Address Ghana’s Waste Crisis

A United States-based Ghanaian environmental advocate has urged Ghana to adopt modern waste-to-wealth strategies, arguing that developed countries are transforming waste into valuable economic resources while poor waste management continues to threaten public health in Ghana.

According to the expert, many advanced economies convert municipal waste into electricity, recycled construction materials, fertilizers, and industrial raw materials, creating thousands of jobs while reducing environmental pollution.

He warned that indiscriminate dumping, open burning of refuse, and poor sanitation continue to contribute to flooding, disease outbreaks, and environmental degradation in many Ghanaian communities.

The advocate called for greater investment in recycling facilities, waste segregation programs, composting projects, and waste-to-energy plants capable of turning refuse into electricity and other valuable products.

Environmental analysts believe such investments could generate significant employment opportunities while reducing Ghana’s dependence on landfill disposal.
