The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has officially inaugurated a reconstructed and expanded Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) at the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, restoring one of Ghana’s most critical heart care facilities after it was destroyed by fire last year.
The state-of-the-art facility is expected to significantly improve the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, providing lifesaving services to thousands of patients across the country.
The inauguration marks a major milestone in Ghana’s healthcare sector and reflects renewed investment in specialist medical infrastructure aimed at improving access to advanced cardiac care.
According to a statement issued by GMTF, the reopening of the Cath Lab represents more than the restoration of a medical facility; it symbolizes renewed hope for patients living with heart conditions and demonstrates the country’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery despite setbacks.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Adjoa Oubuobia Darko-Opoku, Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, described the project as a defining moment in Ghana’s healthcare journey.
She noted that the facility’s reconstruction highlights the importance of resilience, innovation and collaboration in ensuring that essential healthcare services remain available to the public.
The upgraded Cath Lab is equipped with modern technology designed to support a wide range of cardiac procedures, including diagnostic angiography, angioplasty and other minimally invasive interventions used in the treatment of heart diseases.
Health professionals believe the facility will reduce delays in treatment, improve patient outcomes and lessen the need for patients to seek costly medical care abroad.
The National Cardiothoracic Centre, which serves as Ghana’s premier heart treatment institution, plays a crucial role in managing cardiovascular diseases, one of the leading causes of death globally.
Medical experts have welcomed the reopening of the facility, describing it as a major boost to Ghana’s specialist healthcare system and a significant step toward improving access to quality heart care.
The project underscores the government’s broader commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that critical medical services remain accessible to all Ghanaians.
