Over 1,000 Persons Contract New HIV Infections in Bono Within Five Months – GAC

The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has revealed that more than 1,000 new HIV infections were recorded in the Bono Region between January and May 2026, raising concerns over the continued spread of the virus despite ongoing awareness campaigns.

According to the Commission, the region recorded 1,145 new HIV cases during the five-month period, prompting renewed calls for intensified public education, regular testing and adherence to preventive measures.

Health officials attributed the increase to several factors, including risky sexual behavior, stigma surrounding HIV testing and inadequate awareness among vulnerable groups.

The Commission urged residents to know their HIV status through regular screening and encouraged those diagnosed with the virus to begin treatment early to improve their health and reduce transmission.

Officials also stressed the importance of safe sexual practices and community support in combating stigma, noting that discrimination often discourages people from seeking testing and treatment.

The Ghana AIDS Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with health institutions, traditional leaders and civil society organizations to strengthen HIV prevention efforts and reduce new infections across the region.

Health experts say early diagnosis and access to antiretroviral therapy remain critical in achieving Ghana’s target of ending HIV as a public health threat.
