Government Intensifies Campaign Against Maternal Deaths, Strengthens Emergency Care Training

The Government has stepped up efforts to reduce maternal mortality by strengthening emergency obstetric care training for healthcare professionals across the country.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement in Yendi, Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, said improving the skills of frontline health workers is essential to preventing avoidable maternal and newborn deaths.

She explained that the initiative focuses on equipping doctors, midwives, nurses and other healthcare personnel with the knowledge and practical skills needed to manage pregnancy-related complications and respond effectively to medical emergencies.

Dr. Ayensu-Danquah noted that expanding access to quality maternal healthcare remains a national priority, adding that government is committed to improving health infrastructure, increasing the availability of essential medical equipment and ensuring timely referrals for high-risk pregnancies.

She called on regional and district health authorities to work closely with local communities to encourage expectant mothers to attend antenatal clinics and deliver in health facilities under the care of skilled professionals.

Health experts believe that continuous emergency care training, improved referral systems and greater community awareness will significantly contribute to lowering maternal mortality rates and improving maternal and child health outcomes.

The Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with development partners and healthcare institutions to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system and ensure that every mother has access to safe and quality care during pregnancy and childbirth.
