President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish an advanced cardiac center at the Ho Teaching Hospital, a major step aimed at expanding access to specialized heart care for residents of the Volta Region and surrounding areas.
The President said the project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to decentralize specialized healthcare services, ensuring that Ghanaians can access advanced medical treatment without travelling long distances to Accra.
According to President Mahama, the new cardiac center will strengthen the capacity of Ho Teaching Hospital to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases, which remain among the leading causes of illness and death worldwide.
He explained that the initiative is part of a nationwide effort to improve healthcare infrastructure and increase access to specialist medical services across the country.
The Ho cardiac center will complement ongoing cardiology developments at the Tamale Teaching Hospital as well as the recently reconstructed Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, creating a stronger national network for the treatment of heart diseases.
Health experts have welcomed the announcement, noting that the expansion of specialist cardiac services will reduce patient referrals, shorten waiting times and improve survival rates for people suffering from heart-related conditions.
Residents and healthcare professionals in the Volta Region have also expressed optimism that the project will ease the financial and logistical burden associated with travelling to Accra for advanced cardiac treatment.
The government says the initiative reflects its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system through strategic investments in modern medical infrastructure, specialist training and equitable access to quality healthcare services across all regions.
