President Mahama Describes Attacks on Ghanaians in South Africa as Xenophobic

Accra, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama has described the recent attacks targeting Ghanaians in South Africa as xenophobic, stressing that the incidents cannot be dismissed despite calls from some quarters to avoid the term.

Speaking on the ongoing situation involving Ghanaian nationals in South Africa, President Mahama noted that while diplomatic relations between Ghana and South Africa remain strong, the recurring attacks against foreign nationals have become a source of concern.

“Our relations with South Africa continue, and there is no breach in diplomatic relations,” the President stated. “What is happening is not the first time; there have been repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa. They are saying we should not call it xenophobia, but I don’t know any other name for it.”

According to the President, the latest incidents mark the first time that Ghanaians have been directly affected on such a scale by attacks against foreign nationals in South Africa. He emphasized the need for continued dialogue between both governments to ensure the safety and protection of citizens living abroad.

The remarks come amid Ghana’s ongoing efforts to support citizens affected by the unrest, including evacuation and reintegration measures for those wishing to return home. Government officials have already announced employment support initiatives for returning Ghanaians as part of broader efforts to assist those impacted by the violence.

President Mahama reiterated that Ghana remains committed to maintaining its long-standing diplomatic and economic ties with South Africa, while also advocating for stronger protections for foreign nationals residing in the country.

The comments have reignited discussions about recurring anti-immigrant violence in South Africa and the need for African nations to work together to address xenophobia and promote peaceful coexistence across the continent.
