Former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, has arrived in Ghana following her extradition from the United States to serve a sentence after being convicted on multiple corruption-related offences.
The extradition was confirmed by the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, which stated that Attionu was returned to Ghana after being found guilty of more than 70 corruption-related charges, including the alleged embezzlement of over $6 million in Ghanaian taxpayer funds during her tenure at MASLOC.
Her arrival marks a significant development in one of Ghana’s most high-profile corruption cases. The former MASLOC boss was convicted in absentia after failing to return to Ghana for trial, prompting authorities to pursue her extradition through international legal channels.
The case centered on allegations of financial misconduct, causing financial loss to the state, and the misappropriation of public funds intended to support small businesses and entrepreneurs through the government’s microfinance programme.
Anti-corruption advocates have welcomed the extradition, describing it as a strong signal that public officials accused of financial crimes can be held accountable regardless of where they relocate. Many believe the development reinforces ongoing efforts to combat corruption and recover public funds.
Legal experts say Attionu’s return could pave the way for further proceedings related to the enforcement of her sentence and any potential recovery of state assets linked to the case.
The extradition has also reignited public discussion about accountability in public office and the need for stronger safeguards to protect taxpayer resources.
Government officials are yet to provide detailed information on the next steps following her arrival, but authorities are expected to process her through the country’s judicial and correctional systems in accordance with the law.
The case remains one of the most closely watched anti-corruption matters in recent Ghanaian history and is likely to continue drawing significant public attention in the coming weeks.
