UGMC Successfully Performs Four More Kidney Transplants, Bringing Total to 15

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has announced the successful completion of four additional kidney transplant surgeries, marking another major milestone in Ghana’s growing capacity to provide advanced specialized healthcare services.

The latest procedures bring the total number of kidney transplants performed at the Centre to 15 since June 2024, when UGMC carried out its first successful kidney transplant operations. The achievement highlights two years of steady progress in the Centre’s transplant programme and its commitment to expanding access to life-saving medical interventions.

According to UGMC, the successful surgeries were conducted by a multidisciplinary team of Ghanaian and international medical specialists, demonstrating the Centre’s increasing expertise in organ transplantation and post-operative patient care.

Kidney transplantation is widely regarded as one of the most effective treatment options for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease, offering improved quality of life and better long-term outcomes compared to dialysis.

Health professionals have praised the achievement, noting that the growing success of the programme reduces the need for patients to travel abroad for expensive transplant procedures while strengthening Ghana’s position as a hub for specialized medical care in the region.

UGMC management described the milestone as evidence of the Centre’s dedication to excellence in healthcare delivery, research, and medical innovation. Officials also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding transplant services and investing in the training of healthcare professionals to meet the country’s growing healthcare needs.

The accomplishment comes at a time when Ghana continues to invest in strengthening its healthcare infrastructure and improving access to specialized treatment for patients with chronic and life-threatening conditions.

Medical experts believe the continued growth of the kidney transplant programme will provide hope for many patients battling kidney disease and further enhance confidence in Ghana’s healthcare system.
