The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested a key suspect believed to be the lead shipper in the high-profile methamphetamine trafficking case linked to the seizure of drugs valued at approximately US$208 million in Australia.
The arrest was carried out in a joint operation involving NACOC, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), and other national security agencies as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle an international drug trafficking network operating between Ghana and Australia.
Confirming the development on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Director-General of NACOC, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, disclosed that the suspect is a Ghanaian national. However, authorities have withheld the individual’s identity to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations and related security operations.
According to NACOC, the suspect is believed to have played a central role in coordinating the shipment that led to the interception of a massive quantity of methamphetamine by Australian authorities.
The case has attracted international attention due to the enormous street value of the drugs and the alleged transnational criminal network behind the operation.
Security officials say investigators are working to identify additional suspects and establish the full extent of the trafficking syndicate’s operations, both within Ghana and abroad.
Brigadier General Mantey emphasized that Ghana remains committed to strengthening cooperation with international law enforcement agencies in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.
He noted that the arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing and collaboration among security agencies in combating illicit drug networks.
Authorities believe the latest development could provide critical information that may lead to further arrests and prosecutions connected to the case.
The investigation comes amid increasing global concern over the use of West Africa as a transit route for narcotics destined for markets in Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
NACOC has reiterated its commitment to pursuing individuals involved in drug trafficking activities and ensuring that Ghana does not become a safe haven for international narcotics operations.
Further details are expected to emerge as investigations continue and authorities work to uncover the full scope of the network behind one of the largest drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana in recent years.
