Ghana and Jamaica Strengthen Ties as 400 Ghanaian Nurses Set for Deployment

Accra, Ghana — Ghana and Jamaica have taken a major step toward deepening bilateral relations following the revival of their Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) after a 21-year hiatus.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described the renewed partnership as a significant milestone in Ghana-Jamaica relations, following high-level discussions with Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, and her delegation during a historic visit to Accra.

One of the key outcomes of the talks was the signing of an agreement that will see approximately 400 Ghanaian nurses deployed to Jamaica to support healthcare delivery in the Caribbean nation. The move is expected to strengthen Jamaica’s health sector while creating international employment opportunities for Ghanaian healthcare professionals.

The two countries also signed agreements covering defence cooperation and tourism development, further expanding areas of collaboration between the long-standing partners.

In addition, Ghana and Jamaica agreed to conclude ongoing negotiations aimed at sending Ghanaian teachers to Jamaica by August 2026, reflecting the growing demand for Ghanaian professionals abroad.

Mr. Ablakwa praised Jamaica’s continued support for Ghana on the international stage, particularly during the successful adoption of the Ghana-led United Nations resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as one of humanity’s gravest crimes.

The Ghanaian Foreign Minister also acknowledged Jamaica’s appreciation for Ghana’s humanitarian assistance following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melisa, during which Ghana provided military support and relief supplies.

As part of the renewed diplomatic engagement, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has extended a special invitation to President John Dramani Mahama to attend Jamaica’s National Day celebrations as a guest of honour later this year.

Officials from both countries expressed optimism that the revitalized partnership will create new opportunities in education, healthcare, trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, strengthening the historic bonds between Ghana and Jamaica.

The renewed cooperation has been widely welcomed as a demonstration of growing South-South collaboration and a reaffirmation of the shared heritage and friendship between the two nations.
