Accra, July 13, 2026 – The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association (NCSSMA) has called for an independent investigation into an alleged shooting incident during a recent anti-illegal mining (galamsey) operation, urging authorities to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
In a statement, the association expressed concern over reports that an individual was allegedly shot during an operation by security personnel tasked with clamping down on illegal mining activities. It said while it supports the government’s efforts to combat galamsey, law enforcement operations must be conducted professionally and in accordance with the law.
The NCSSMA stressed that any use of force by security agencies should be proportionate and subject to due process, adding that allegations of excessive force must be thoroughly investigated to maintain public confidence.
The association urged the government to institute an impartial probe to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that anyone found to have acted unlawfully is held accountable.
It also called on security agencies to strengthen engagement with licensed small-scale miners to distinguish them from illegal operators, arguing that lawful miners should not be unfairly affected by anti-galamsey operations.
According to the association, effective collaboration between government, mining communities and licensed miners is essential to achieving the shared objective of eliminating illegal mining while protecting legitimate livelihoods.
The NCSSMA further appealed for calm among residents and stakeholders, encouraging all parties to cooperate with investigators and allow the legal process to take its course.
The alleged shooting has renewed discussions about the conduct of anti-galamsey operations and the need to balance strict enforcement with respect for human rights and the rule of law.
Authorities are yet to release a comprehensive report on the incident, while investigations are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting.
