KMA Increases Monthly Wages of Sweepers from GH¢250 to GH¢800

Kumasi, Ashanti Region, July 13, 2026 – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a significant increase in the monthly wages of its street sweepers, raising their pay from GH¢250 to GH¢800 as part of efforts to improve the welfare of sanitation workers.

The wage adjustment, which takes immediate effect, is aimed at recognizing the vital role sweepers play in maintaining cleanliness across the metropolis while addressing long-standing concerns over low remuneration.

Speaking on the initiative, KMA officials said the increment reflects the Assembly’s commitment to improving the living conditions of sanitation workers and motivating them to deliver efficient services.

The Assembly acknowledged that the previous monthly allowance of GH¢250 had become inadequate due to the rising cost of living, making the wage review necessary to provide workers with more meaningful financial support.

Sanitation workers welcomed the decision, describing it as a major relief after years of appeals for better pay. Many expressed optimism that the increase would help them meet basic household expenses and improve their standard of living.

The KMA also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening waste management and environmental sanitation, noting that improving the welfare of frontline sanitation personnel is key to achieving a cleaner and healthier city.

The announcement has been widely praised by labor advocates and residents, with many calling on other Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to consider similar measures for sanitation workers in their jurisdictions.

The Assembly said it will continue to invest in sanitation infrastructure and worker welfare as part of broader efforts to enhance public health and environmental sustainability in Kumasi.

The latest wage increase marks one of the most substantial improvements in the remuneration of KMA sweepers in recent years and is expected to boost morale among workers responsible for keeping the city clean.
