Spain Silence France to Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Final
Spain produced a tactical masterclass to defeat France 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, booking their place in the final with one of their most complete performances of the tournament.

The much-anticipated clash between two of football’s biggest powers began at a high tempo, with France looking to exploit the pace of Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise. However, Spain’s disciplined defense and composed midfield prevented Les Bleus from creating clear-cut chances.

Spain broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was brought down in the penalty area by Lucas Digne. Veteran striker Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted the resulting penalty, sending goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way to give La Roja a deserved 1-0 lead.

The European champions continued to dominate possession throughout the first half, with Rodri, Fabián Ruiz and Dani Olmo controlling the midfield and denying France the opportunity to build sustained attacks. Spain also had a goal ruled out for offside, underlining their attacking intent before the break.

France emerged with greater urgency after halftime, but Spain remained compact and organized at the back. Their pressure paid off again in the 58th minute, when Dani Olmo combined brilliantly with Pedro Porro, who finished clinically past Maignan to double Spain’s advantage.

Despite introducing fresh attacking options, France struggled to break through Spain’s resolute defense. Mbappé was largely kept quiet throughout the match, while Dembélé and Olise found little space against a well-drilled Spanish backline. Goalkeeper Unai Simón was rarely troubled as Spain comfortably saw out the victory.

Following the match, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente praised his players’ discipline and described them as the best team in the world, while France manager Didier Deschamps admitted his side were outplayed and lacked the technical quality needed to compete with Spain’s possession-based style.

The victory extends Spain’s remarkable unbeaten run and sends the 2010 world champions into their first World Cup final in 16 years. They will now face the winner of the second semi-final between England and Argentina, while France will contest the third-place playoff.
