Supporters within the New Patriotic Party have intensified calls for former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong to take on a more prominent leadership role as the party navigates internal divisions.
Party grassroots members believe his outspoken leadership style and nationwide appeal could help strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
Political analysts, however, say any leadership decision must emerge through the party’s constitutional processes and internal elections.
The calls come amid ongoing debates over the NPP’s direction following recent political developments.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Base Party urged the outspoken politician to consider taking up a major leadership role within the party.
“At this critical moment, the NPP needs a strong, fearless, and unifying figure. We believe Hon. Kennedy Agyapong is best positioned to rally the base, heal divisions, and lead the party back to power,” the statement read.
Context of the Appeal
The appeal comes amid growing internal disagreements within the NPP following the 2024 election defeat. Several factions have emerged, with some members calling for fresh leadership and a new direction ahead of the 2028 polls.
Kennedy Agyapong, popularly known as “Ken Kesse”, has remained one of the most influential and vocal figures in the NPP. He is widely admired by the party’s grassroots for his straightforwardness and development-focused politics.
While he has not yet publicly responded to the appeal, political observers believe his decision could significantly shape the future direction and unity of the NPP.
The Base Party has vowed to continue mobilizing support for Agyapong, describing him as “the people’s champion” who can restore hope and confidence among party faithful.
