The Minister of Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to allocate GH¢100 million every year specifically for Special Needs Education, starting from the 2027 academic year.
This significant annual investment aims to improve access, infrastructure, teaching materials, and support services for learners with disabilities across the country.
Announcing the initiative, the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusive education, noting that every child, regardless of their physical or learning challenges, deserves equal access to quality education.
“This GH¢100 million annual allocation is a clear demonstration of our resolve to ensure that no learner is left behind. Special needs education will receive sustained funding to enhance infrastructure, train teachers, and provide necessary learning aids,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
Expected Impact
Officials estimate that more than 9,000 learners with special needs will directly benefit from this enhanced funding and support. The money is expected to be used for:
Construction and rehabilitation of inclusive classrooms, Procurement of assistive devices and learning materials, Training of teachers in special needs education, Supporting inclusive policies in mainstream schools
This move has been welcomed by disability rights advocates and education stakeholders, who have long called for increased investment in special needs education.
The allocation forms part of the government’s broader commitment to achieving inclusive and equitable quality education as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 4.
