Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton delivered one of the defining moments of the 2026 season after securing his first Grand Prix victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
The British driver produced a masterclass in strategy and tyre management to claim his 106th career Formula One victory, ending a winless streak that stretched back to 2024 and giving Ferrari its first race win of the season.
Hamilton’s triumph was made even more significant by the circumstances surrounding the race. Ferrari’s aggressive three-stop strategy paid off perfectly, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a late retirement due to a mechanical failure, dramatically reducing his lead in the drivers’ standings.
Mercedes driver George Russell finished second, while McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the podium in third, producing the first all-British Formula One podium since 1968.
An emotional Hamilton thanked Ferrari’s engineers and staff after the race, describing the victory as a dream come true.
“You’ve helped me achieve this dream and I can’t thank you enough,” Hamilton said over team radio after crossing the finish line. He later admitted he had always wondered what it would feel like to win a race driving for Ferrari, one of Formula One’s most iconic teams.
The victory also made Hamilton the oldest Formula One race winner since 1970, further cementing his legendary status in the sport. At 41 years old, the British star showed that he remains a serious contender for the championship despite facing younger rivals throughout the season.
The race was not without drama. Antonelli, who had won five consecutive races and led the championship comfortably heading into Barcelona, saw his hopes dashed when an electrical issue forced him out of the race with only a few laps remaining. Despite the setback, the young Mercedes driver remains at the top of the standings, though Hamilton has significantly closed the gap.
Formula One fans around the world celebrated Hamilton’s return to the top step of the podium, with many describing it as one of the most emotional victories of his illustrious career. Rival drivers and team principals also praised the achievement, acknowledging the significance of seeing Hamilton finally win in Ferrari colours.
With momentum now firmly on Ferrari’s side, attention turns to the next race in Austria, where Hamilton will be looking to build on his breakthrough victory and continue his pursuit of an eighth world championship.
