The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged human trafficking operation involving the exploitation of young girls for prostitution in the Talensi District.
The suspects, identified as Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo, and Faith Levy, were apprehended following a police operation at Gbane, a suburb within the Talensi District, after intelligence suggested that young girls were being trafficked and forced into commercial sex work.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly recruited and transported vulnerable young girls to the mining community, where they were reportedly coerced into prostitution for financial gain.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to combat human trafficking, child exploitation, and other organized crimes targeting vulnerable persons, particularly women and children.
Police officers rescued several victims during the operation, and arrangements are being made to provide them with the necessary medical attention, counselling, and social welfare support. Authorities are also working with relevant agencies to facilitate the safe reintegration of the victims with their families where possible.
The suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators as enquiries continue. Police say they are pursuing additional leads to determine whether other individuals are connected to the trafficking network and whether similar operations are being conducted in neighboring communities.
The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons and dismantling criminal syndicates involved in human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The Service also appealed to members of the public to report suspicious activities involving the movement or exploitation of children and young women to the nearest police station.
Human trafficking remains a serious criminal offence under Ghanaian law, carrying severe penalties for individuals found guilty of recruiting, transporting, harboring, or exploiting persons through force, deception, or coercion.
Authorities have assured the public that anyone found to have participated in the alleged trafficking operation will face the full rigors of the law as investigations progress.
