Community Pharmacists Key to Free Primary Healthcare Agenda – Health Minister

The Minister of Health has reaffirmed the critical role of community pharmacists in advancing the government’s free primary healthcare agenda, describing them as essential partners in expanding access to quality healthcare services.

Speaking at a health sector event, the Minister said community pharmacies remain the first point of contact for many Ghanaians seeking medical advice and treatment, making their contribution vital to achieving universal health coverage.

The Minister emphasized that pharmacists play an important role in disease prevention, medication management, patient education and early detection of health conditions, helping to ease pressure on hospitals and clinics.

He noted that the government’s commitment to free primary healthcare would rely on stronger collaboration with pharmacists and other frontline healthcare professionals to ensure affordable and accessible services for all citizens.

The Health Minister also called for greater investment in community pharmacy services, digital health systems and continuous professional development to improve healthcare delivery across the country.

Industry stakeholders welcomed the government’s recognition of pharmacists, saying stronger partnerships would enhance healthcare accessibility, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The event brought together healthcare professionals, policymakers and representatives from the pharmaceutical sector to discuss strategies for strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and achieving improved public health outcomes.
