Driver Arrested After Fatal Crash Claims Life of Ashanti Police Officer

Police have arrested 24-year-old Emmanuel Marfo, the driver of a red Honda Accord saloon car, following a tragic road accident that claimed the life of Sergeant Micheal Ottoo, an officer attached to the Mampongteng District Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in the Ashanti Region.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, along the Bomfa–Tafo Pankrono road, according to preliminary police reports.

Investigators say Sergeant Ottoo was riding an unregistered motorcycle from Bomfa towards Tafo Pankrono when the Honda Accord, travelling in the opposite direction, allegedly veered off its lane and crashed head-on into the motorcycle.

The impact threw the officer from the motorcycle, leaving him with multiple life-threatening injuries.

Emergency responders and bystanders rushed to the scene and quickly transported Sergeant Ottoo to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the saloon car, Emmanuel Marfo, was immediately taken into police custody to assist with investigations. Authorities have since impounded both the vehicle and the damaged motorcycle as part of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police say accident reconstruction experts are examining the scene to determine the exact cause of the collision, including whether excessive speed, reckless driving, mechanical failure, or driver negligence contributed to the tragedy.

The death of Sergeant Ottoo has sent shockwaves through the Ashanti Regional Police Command, with colleagues describing him as a committed and hardworking traffic officer who served with dedication and professionalism.

Senior police officials have extended their condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues, assuring them that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that anyone found responsible will face the full rigors of the law.

The incident has also renewed concerns about road safety in Ghana, where head-on collisions remain among the leading causes of fatal road accidents. Road safety advocates are urging motorists to exercise greater caution, obey traffic regulations, and remain disciplined behind the wheel to prevent avoidable tragedies.

The Ghana Police Service has appealed to all road users to respect lane discipline, avoid dangerous overtaking, and remain vigilant at all times, stressing that responsible driving is essential to reducing the growing number of road fatalities across the country.

Authorities say investigations remain ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
