President Mahama Says Government Intensifies Talks to Revive Komenda Sugar Factor

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that government is actively engaging strategic investors and industry stakeholders to revive the Komenda Sugar Factory, one of Ghana’s most significant but underutilised industrial projects.

Speaking during a regional development engagement, the President acknowledged that despite significant public investment over the years, the factory has struggled to operate sustainably due to financing challenges, inadequate raw material supply, and management difficulties.

He said government remains committed to transforming the facility into a fully operational sugar processing plant capable of creating employment, supporting local sugarcane farmers, reducing sugar imports, and strengthening Ghana’s agro-industrial sector.

President Mahama explained that discussions are ongoing with both domestic and international investors to secure sustainable financing and technical expertise needed to restore full production.

The revival forms part of government’s broader industrialisation strategy aimed at increasing value addition within Ghana’s agricultural sector while boosting local manufacturing.

Farmers in the Central Region have welcomed the renewed commitment, expressing hope that a fully functional factory would provide reliable markets for sugarcane production and improve household incomes.

Government officials believe the successful revival of the Komenda Sugar Factory could significantly contribute to Ghana’s food processing industry and reduce reliance on imported refined sugar.
