The Bia East District Assembly in the Western North Region has been ranked the best-performing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) in Ghana after emerging as the top performer on the 2025 MMDA Performance League Table.
The district secured the highest position following a nationwide assessment of all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies across Ghana’s 16 administrative regions. The evaluation measured performance in areas including local governance, service delivery, transparency and compliance with public financial management standards.
The announcement was made during a ceremony in Accra to recognize outstanding assemblies for their adherence to the Public Financial Management Act and their commitment to accountable and efficient local governance.
Presenting the findings, Herbert Apaloo, Programmes Manager, said the annual performance league table is designed to promote accountability, strengthen local governance and encourage healthy competition among MMDAs in delivering quality public services.
According to the assessment, Bia East distinguished itself through strong financial management practices, effective administration and its commitment to improving development outcomes for residents.
Officials praised the district’s leadership and staff for maintaining high standards of governance and ensuring prudent management of public resources.
The Performance League Table serves as an important tool for evaluating the effectiveness of local government institutions, highlighting areas of excellence while identifying opportunities for improvement across the country.
Ghana currently has 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, which are responsible for local governance, development planning, infrastructure delivery and the provision of essential public services within their jurisdictions.
Government officials say the ranking reinforces the importance of transparency, accountability and sound financial management in accelerating development at the local level.
They encouraged other assemblies to adopt best practices demonstrated by the top-performing MMDAs to improve service delivery and promote sustainable development in their respective communities.
The recognition is expected to motivate local authorities nationwide to strengthen governance systems and enhance the quality of services provided to citizens.
